Japan in spring: when to go for the cherry blossom

The cherry blossom (sakura) moves from south to north. In Tokyo and Kyoto it usually falls between late March and early April, while in mountain areas such as Takayama or the Japanese Alps it arrives later, around mid-April. The timing shifts by a few days each year, so it pays to be flexible.

How to plan the route

A first trip of 12 to 15 days combines Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka nicely with a rural stretch: Takayama, Shirakawa-go or Kanazawa. High-speed trains link the main cities, and rail passes can pay off if you make several long journeys.

Practical tips

  • Book early: spring is high season and hotels fill up.
  • A night in a ryokan with an onsen is one of the most memorable experiences.
  • Carry cash: many small shops and temples don't accept cards.

Northern lights in Tromsø: what you need to know

Tromsø, above the Arctic Circle, is one of the most convenient bases for seeing the aurora, with scheduled flights and organised tours every night. The season runs roughly from September to March, when the nights are long and dark.

How to improve your chances

The aurora depends on solar activity and, above all, on clear skies. That's why it's best to stay several nights and go out with guides who travel in search of clear patches, sometimes far from the city.

What to pack

  • Layers, thermal underwear, a hat, gloves and waterproof boots.
  • A spare battery: the cold drains them fast.
  • A tripod if you want to take long-exposure photos.

Tenerife, an all-round winner for school trips

Tenerife combines nature, science and fun within short distances: Teide National Park, La Laguna (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), water parks and boat trips to spot whales and dolphins. With a direct flight from Valencia, three or four days go a long way.

What to include in the programme

  • Mount Teide and its volcanic surroundings, with a guide.
  • The historic centre of La Laguna.
  • A fun day out and a boat trip to spot dolphins or whales.

For the school, what matters is a fixed price per pupil, group insurance and paperwork for the families. We include it all in the trip kit.
